A unique house with long tradition, Palais Coburg is one of the most splendid hotels in Vienna. List General Contractor (List GC) was responsible for the interior outfitting of the hotel residence.
The five-star Superior hotel in the historic centre of Vienna resides in a palace, which was constructed by the Saxe-Coburg aristocratic family in 1845. Even the very foundation of the house is unique, with the building standing on parts of the old renaissance fortifications which extended around the city centre of Vienna. The POK Pühringer Foundation acquired the palace in 1997 and restored it to its previous glory as a hotel residence thanks to elaborate modifications and renovations.

Whether it be the imperial ceiling heights, stucco ceilings, precious wall coverings, gilding or historical furnishings, while fitting the interior of the neoclassical palace, the developer attached great importance to creating a premium reproduction that was true to the original style and showed great attention to detail. At the same time, the facilities needed to be modern and contemporary. This proved to be both a challenge and a motivation for List GC.

In accordance with the POK Pühringer Foundation’s vision, List GC planned, delivered and fitted the individual interiors of all 34 luxury suites. For instance, this included three maisonette suites with very generous room layouts over multiple floors, antique furnishings, luxurious bathrooms and their own kitchens. No two suites are identical. Each has its own distinctive layout and individual style – modern, historical or a blend of the two. List GC created the suites in accordance with an example suite, which – in tried and tested List GC fashion – was produced in advance with great attention to detail and coordinated with the owner.

In addition to the luxury suites, List GC also delivered all of the door systems in public areas in accordance with the POK Pühringer Foundation’s designs. Similarly to the suites, no two doors are identical. Each of their 320 elements is custom-made. The design requirements had to be brought into harmony with rigorous technical demands. Since the historic building is being used as a hotel, it has to meet strict requirements with respect to fire safety, the coordination of emergency escape routes and sound insulation. Moreover, the fact that the hotel was still open for business also called for particular flexibility and swift logistics solutions during the renovation work.

With proven and professional project management, the many trades and professionals were coordinated during production and on-site at the palace later on. This ranged from those purchasing the exquisite material, to those painting stucco on the ceilings, the metalworkers manufacturing specifically created metal handrails, the glaziers producing the elaborately worked glass elements in windows and doors and the carpenters producing individual furnishings, to name but a few. And all of this was completed within an extremely tight time frame!

In this unique building, List GC’s specialists were able to bring the aesthetic expectations in line with the technical requirements and therefore to create a harmonious overall picture which is second to none.

“With the restoration and restructuring of Palais Coburg into a five-star Superior hotel, we set about a very large and challenging project. Given the fact that it is a listed building, the rooms are not the same size, the suites are predominantly on two floors, the latest technology was to be incorporated and, added to this, the pressure of a timely opening, this meant that there was a lot of hard work and sweat.
List GC accepted the challenge and implemented our requests and strict requirements as best possible. It is thanks to their specialists, who have attended to Palais Coburg’s facilities with a great deal of passion, that his magnificent house could be shaped into its current form.
Following our credo of “preserving the past while shaping the future”, every day we are pleased with our foundation’s headquarters at this unique and wonderful palace in the heart of Vienna.”

We value the privacy of our customers and we are only able to showcase a selection of our Residential projects publicly. Although this remarkable project lies already a little further back, we are more than happy that Pühringer Privatstiftung gave us the opportunity to present our work within Palais Coburg.
